More in the Tokyo News, Pre-Trip, PreparationsAmidst CNN’s coverage of Paris Hilton’s court trial glaring at me in my office, I’m attempting to find statistics on YouTube usage per state. However, for one reason or another, YouTube will not release data on pretty much anything having to do with their visitors. They’ll release information on how many videos they have, what videos receive the most views, how many hours people spend watching them, etc. However, the geographic location of these viewers is a completely different story. I did however pull a few statistics from a Wallstreet Journal article. They are:
1) 70% of YouTube’s registered users are American, and roughly 50% are under 20.
2) The total time people spent watching YouTube since it started last year is 9,305 years.
3) YouTube has some 45 terabytes of videos.
4) Video views reached 1.73 billion.
Hmm. That first statistic makes me a little quesy. Okay, so 70% of viewers are American. Check. Good to know. However, 50% are under 20-years-old. Under 20-years-old? Hmmm. 20-year-olds…
Uh oh.
My fear lies not in the assumption that I will now have trouble finding viewers to drive me across the country. I mean, who has more free time and expendable incomes than Americans under 20? My fear lies in whether these adolescents will have anything interesting to say. When I was 20 my main concerns revolved around pizza, beer, and skateboards. Although my interests haven’t changed too dramatically in the past few years, I at least now like to throw Scrabble into the mix on occasion. Yep, pizza, beer, skateboards, and Scrabble– now, that’s one hell of a night!
I may need to rethink my target demographic.
